The Universal Principles of Management

Management is basically designing a process. It has existed since the dawn of humanity. People were managing hunting expedition and farmland.  The question we have to answer is how can we develop and improve the management process.

  1. Normally we are reliant on two things first on people or employees and on their skills second on the way we do things so by improving people and their capabilities and the current way of doing things or our current process we will develop a improved management process.

    1. How can you improve people?? I guess by motivating them well then it's a completely waste of time. You should hire right people in the first place.Motivating wrong people on the bus will have some demotivating effect on the right people and then at one stage you will be left with only wrong people

  3. Management is a basically a process to evolve efforts of people to accomplish goals and objectives using available resources effectively and efficiently. Development and Improvement of this Process totally depends upon your approaches, that either you are People Oriented or Result Oriented and more, it also depends upon your personal tactics and techniques that how you plan it and how you implement that particular process.

  4. The development and improvement of management process is dependant upon some important skills. Conceptual skills, human skills and technical skills are the skills which each individual or an organisation should possess for better management. All these skills should be learned, practised and then taught. Of course, once you have higher skills you can plan something new, effective and efficient, and making the process better.

  5. In order to develop and improve the management process, one should follow certain functions like setting the objectives such as strategic objectives that would be translated into tactical objectives, and to put these objectives into effect planning is needed. Then organize the resources available to meet these objectives. Moreover, directing and motivating the staff is very important because they are the main resource. Furthermore, coordinating activities of goals of each branch, division, region and even all staff must be welded together to achieve a common purpose of sense. Lastly, controlling and measuring performance against targets are to keep the management informed about their capability in order to keep on improving and developing.

    1. well i think direction is more likely to be important rather than motivation. because you cannot go to everyone to motivate them. employees should be self motivated in order to work for the organization.

      Delete
    2. That's the point. Organization should improve their working conditions in such a manner that employees are self motivated and work hard towards achieving the targets set for them.

  6. Everything should go according to a certain flow. it is not just capabilities and skills, instead it is a productive working environment that leads to better productivity. So a process should be adopted that will provide the workers with better and constructive working environment

    1. I think you cannot create better working environment until and unless you have good skills and capabilities. Can we create a better working place without human skills ?

  7. The first thing to do to improve the management system or process is to eliminate the 'label' or 'grade'. The problem with label or grade is no matter how much feedback you give somebody if you summarize the whole conversation with label or grade basically the individual dismisses everything you told him up to that point so if what you looking for is behavior change in the end you're not gonna have it so, dismiss the label or grade you don't need it.

    1. Would you please briefly elaborate the concept of label and grade?

      Delete
    2. Label is when you label your employees on the basis of their performance and thus to sort them like class A,B,C or 1,2,,3.You're saying "outstanding" to class A and "keep working hard" to class B and "You need to improve yourself" to class C .In order to improve management process You're gonna have to take these phrases out from your mind.

    3. Grading is when giving an employee an ‘f’ and he learned nothing.Giving another an ‘a’ and what has she learned, still nothing.Grades are subjective crutches used by the people because they either do not know any better.Grading should be replaced by meaningful narrative feedback.Feedback also encourages learning while grades only stifle it.So,you have to eliminate label or grade in order to improve management process.

  8. Process of management starts by setting a certain goal, identifying the current position and than choosing from the different alternatives to start working towards that particular goal. To improve this management process the person (manager) has to use his available resources efficiently and make his process effective enough to achieve the desired results.

  9. The conventional definition of management is getting work done through people, but real management is developing people through work

  10. To develop and improve the management process we need to first focus on 4 questions:
    1. where are we now? (evaluate)
    2. where should we be ? (envision)
    3. how do we get there?(empower)
    4. how do we keep getting better?(excel)
According to Jim Collin, before focusing on these question, management should first bring in the right people on the bus(first who then what) and then making them push the flywheel with all their efforts (analyzing the above questions and implementing on the plans with consistency) to achieve the desired goals of the organisation.

  11. Management process depends on the situation. There are situations in which we know what to do and how to do. and yet there are situations which are new to us, for these situations we need a new process in order to manage or solve that situation. we can improve that process of managing by the following points:
    - knowing the positive and negative sides of the situation, knowing your resources.
    - a vision, an outcome where we want to go.
    - make as many alternatives as u can to achieve the desired outcome.
    - select, implement and control an alternative.
    - evaluate

  12. Management process is a process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling any type of business activity. It can be developed by formulating strategies to achieve a certain goal and then choosing the best strategy to achieve desired goal. Manager can improve it by taking actions in order to identify, analyse and then improve the existing situation to achieve desired outcome.

  13. Management is an evolving area. It is being filled with day to day experiences and examples. Many of the top notch companies still face the management issues, some needs motivated HR whereas others crave for better strategies. It cannot be learnt theoretically but practically, it can be improved with adapting it with current times.

  14. Management process can develop according to the goal which includes different strategies and planning but also the outcome. To improve management process, one should have ability of all the three skills. Past experiences also helps to improve the management process.

  15. goals can be further divided into subgoals. achieving those sub goals will surely benefit the organization to achieve more and step by step rather than putting the whole organization into only one direction. this makes them more dynamic also.

  16. Management is the ensemble of activities of planning and monitoring the performance of a process. Management is the use of a repeatable process to improve the outcome of the project. It can be improved by the following methods:

vision - proper functions and processes

define - define the goal of the change

measure - determine the appropriate measure to determine success

analyze - compare the various simulations to determine an optimal improvement

improve - select and implement the improvement

control - deploy this implementation and by use of user-defined dashboards monitor the improvement in real time and feed the performance information back into the simulation model in preparation for the next improvement iteration

re-engineer - revamp the processes from scratch for better results

  17. We can improve management process by maintaining a "BALANCE". it is a key word and can be describe in many different ways.

  18. Ensure senior leadership models behavior that makes the rank-and-file proud to be part of the team. If seniors respect juniors and give them value, then management would be much easier.

    1. How to implement these senior leadership models fahad ? please elaborate little more

    2. Good question Hermain,
It's simple , just make sure that nothing demoralizes employees more quickly than seeing senior leaders act in a way they don’t respect, and few things energize employees more than a senior team they admire. Leaders are always being watched and judged; employees have keen eyes (and are keen data sharers!) So make sure, if you want a good productivity in the company, always ensure senior leadership models behavior which will in return result in easy and improved management along with better outcome.

  19. "whether it is about goals or sub-goals, I believe the first step would be to prioritize the steps to achieve each goal by prioritizing each goal. Giving priorities makes it easier to move forward towards one's goals. Priority is a key which makes our goals more selective and achievable. So we should give first priority to those goals which are SMART (specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-based)"

    1. Stole my point. lol
Well I too agree to this point. Prioritizing our goals can help us show the way to achieve our main objective and can even show us the correct (or close to it) process by working on which can assure you success.

  20. Deployment is a necessary substance for a better management process.. although the importance of fundamental self reliance tools(numerous skills),visionary outlook, heading principle and active determination altogether lead towards a best management process.

  21. In order to develop management process we should see all the phases such as:
    1. How to achieve organizational goals?
    2. How to manage organizational resources effectively and efficiently?
Further more, 4 basic management functions will help to make up the management process that is planning, organizing, influencing and controlling as all these functions are interrelated with each other because the performance of one depends on the performance of others. Lastly, an organization can only achieve its goal effectively by working with and through people and other organization resource.

  22. Management processes can be improved and developed through:
    a) A clear vision and identification of objectives that needs to be achieved and processes that needs to be followed.
    b) Analyzing the weaknesses and strengths of existing processes. In order to find the changes and improvements required.
    c) Recommend changes and communicate the roles and responsibilities. It must be kept in mind that there must be a clear vision of how the organization will differ fron before the changes that were applied to processes.

  23. Management process reflects the structure of an organization, therefore it is necessary for a management process to cope up with the external factors along with the internal factors. Because a company and its employees are affected more from the external forces rather then internal.
Having a clear mission statement and vision statement with the right people can lead an organization towards reaching its goal more effectively.

  24. In order to improve the management process, the leaders are required to develop management skills. The management skills include the technical knowledge about the market, leadership skills and conceptual skills.
Firstly. leaders must carry out a self evaluation test to honestly find out the areas they need to improve. Secondly, gathering more knowledge about the worlds market and scenario can be a helping hand in developing a better management process. Also, leaders can do an intensive study on other competitive companies to find out how they improved or what unique strategies do they follow.

*preparing the ground and developing necessary communication techniques with the employees so they cannot resist when bring out of their comfort zone.
*obtaining necessary data for implementation techniques.

    2. develop of new attitudes and behavior and implementing change.
    but what to do?
    *Problem diagnosis
    *action and planning
    *implementation of the change
    * have a followup and stabilization
    *assessment of the consequences.

    3. finally solidify the change at new level and reinforcement through supporting mechanism/policies
    but what to do?
    *ongoing monitoring
    *learning from processes
*teach necessary skills to employees for continuous implementation of the change.
